Piney Dam
Francis J. Palo, Inc. was awarded a project to resurface the face of the Piney Generation Station for GPU/GENCO on March 4, 1997. The project was south of Interstate 80 on the scenic Clarion River. The project consisted of building an access road to access the project with a cofferdam to dewater the work area. Dewatering of the innerpool was accomplished with floating 8" electric pumps, and the pool elevation was dropped below pre-dam construction levels, to perform safety inspections. A bypass flow system consisting of a 36" steel pipe, suspended in the air, maintained 100 CFM flow from the gate #1 through the cofferdam, to divert water for fish habitat and downstream flow. Enhanced access to both sides of the spillway was the key to successful and expedient completion of the Phase I, lower spillway rehabilitation. Excavators, cranes, & ready mix deliveries were all available at the work area, sitting on the dam spillway. Current weather conditions were carefully monitored the entire length of the project for possible flooding. Approximately 1,000 yds of concrete was placed on Phase I of the project.
